Arlington, Mass. -
On a cold, stormy weekend in Charlestown the Arlington
under-10 girls displayed awesome teamwork and perseverance to win
the annual McGoff Christmas Classic tournament.
All weekend, tournament Most Valuable Player Katherine Crane was
outstanding in net allowing only six goals in four games.
Crane's timely saves, coupled with an unbelievably strong defensive
effort from Courtney Kelly, Maggie Kelly, Lyndsey Smith, Avery
Eisenheim and Julie Foran, helped lead the team to the championship
game on a blustery, wintry Sunday morning.
In the round robin games, Ryan Moran scored two goals against
Winchester with assists credited to Allison Britt and Jessica
Cammarano. Smith completed the scoring with a fabulous
individual effort that involved skating past four Winchester
defenders. Katherine Crane preserved the 3-0 shutout with many
great saves in the third period.
Despite a 2-1 loss to Charlestown, Arlington played great team
defense and had many opportunities to tie the game. Smith
scored the lone goal on one of her signature coast-to-coast
rushes. The offensive trio of Mackenzie Stueve, Jillian
Danton, and Lexie Kindle played a strong game for the Spy
Ponders. In Arlington's third game, Reading defeated Arlington
3-1 in an exciting match-up. Arlington's solo goal of this
game was credited to Anastasia Siegel with the assists attributed to
Bridget Crane and Julie Enos.
In a thrilling climax to the weekend Arlington qualified
for the championship game based on a goal differential tie-breaker
between Winchester and Charlestown. The girls were delighted
to land in the championship game and were eager to avenge their
earlier loss to undefeated Reading.
Forty-five seconds into the game Kayla Dibiase opened the scoring
for Arlington with assists credited to Molly Stanton and Ysa
Campbell-Breen. Once again the defense lead by Courtney Kelly,
Maggie Kelly, Avery Eisenheim, Ryan Moran and Lyndsey Smith were
simply amazing in thwarting Reading's strong offense. Reading
scored late in the second period on a deflected shot from the
point. Reading rode this momentum into the third period,
however Katherine Crane was up to the challenge frustrating Reading
by casting aside many scoring opportunities.
With overtime looming, Arlington's Catherine Malatesta scored
what proved to be the game and championship winning goal with four
minutes remaining with the assist credited to Allison Britt.

After
tying their opening game against Reading 4-4 on Saturday during
Columbus Day weekend, the girl's stormed back to win all 3 games on
Sunday, against Nashua (5-1),
Chelmsford (3-1) and Walpole (3-1). On championship Monday,
the girl's once again faced the Panthers of Nashua in what became
one of the most exciting games in Melrose girl's
hockey history. The game was tied 1-1 going into the 3rd
period when the Panthers struck and tallied their second
goal with only 2:47 left to go. Undaunted, Coach Scott Giordano and
the team gathered themselves together. With a calculated risk,
Coach Giordano pulled the goal- tender with only about a minute
remaining. The risk paid off as Melrose scored their second goal to
tie with only 23 seconds left in the period. The time ticked down
and the buzzer sounded sending the game into over-time. Four
exhausting over-time periods and many opportunities later,
Melrose's Makayla Lucey streaked across the middle of the ice and
buried the puck into the back of the Panther's net, sending the Melrose
fan's, teammate's
and coach's into a well deserved 3-2 win
